Inter-Korean Family Reunions to Begin Thursday

Inter-Korean family reunions will begin Thursday afternoon for the first time in three years and four months.

Eighty-two elderly South Koreans and 59 of their family members arrived at Mount Geumgang on Thursday afternoon. They have been preparing for the trip to North Korea since Wednesday in a South Korean coastal city south of the border.

The participants will meet their North Korean family members from Thursday through Saturday over the course of six events, starting with a group reunion at 3 p.m. Thursday. They will be able to spend a total of eleven hours together.

One hundred-78 North Koreans are known to have arrived at the mountain resort on Wednesday to reunite with their long-lost families from the South.

Up to seven centimeters of more snow is expected to fall around Mount Geumgang on Thursday. However, snowfall is unlikely to affect the reunions thanks to continuous snow-clearing efforts.

A medical team is accompanying the South Korean group as 80 percent of the South Korean participants are in their 80s or 90s.
