Kerry to Visit South Korea in February

Anchor: There is buzz U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will visit South Korea this month, a trip he hasn’t made since April of last year. It’s anticipated North Korea would top discussions between the secretary and officials in Seoul, especially as the trip would fall right before joint South Korea-U.S. military exercises that have angered the North.

Report: Diplomatic sources say U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry will visit South Korea later this month.

On Saturday, Kerry said he will visit China in two weeks at a security conference in Germany where he discussed President Obama’s Asia rebalance policy. He is expected to visit Seoul before or after his trip to China, and sources say the South Korean and U.S. governments are fine-tuning Kerry's schedule. Japan is not yet on Kerry's itinerary.

If Kerry comes to Seoul, the visit would fall just before the start of the annual South Korea-U.S. joint military drills.

The U.S. Secretary of State is expected to meet with President Park Geun-hye and Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se to discuss Korean Peninsula security and blocking North Korean provocations.

Yun and Kerry agreed in Washington in January to continue discussing the situation in North Korea following the execution of Kim Jong-un’s uncle, Jang Song-thaek. Jang was once considered North Korea’s second most powerful figure.

Kerry is also expected to adjust the schedule for Obama's trip to Seoul. The South Korean government hopes Obama visits the South Korean capital in April for his first trip to Asia in his second term. Obama’s full itinerary has not been announced, but he is expected to visit Japan and the Philippines in April.
