A professor of history, Newt Gingrich served in the House of Representatives beginning in 1978. Gingrich was the chief architect behind the "Contract with America" in 1994, a pledge that led republicans to their first congressional victory in the house in nearly 40 years. As the 54th Speaker of the House, his policies oversaw a period of economic expansion, welfare reform, and the first balanced budget since 1969. Announcing his candidacy on May 11th 2011, he is now a candidate for the Republican nomination for the president of the United States.
