Bea Arthur: Through the Years

maude.jpg Let's take a Youtube journey through this career - one of the biggest in TV history. There's plenty of Bea Arthur on the web, and you can - and should - go on your own journey, should you so so desire.

But here are some of the obvious backward glances...the TV Land "Sex and the City" parody, that was (I believe) last year...a clip from "Mame" - she starred as Vera opposite Lucille Ball in the '74 screen version...the abortion clip from "Maude," which pretty much defined her career on TV...

There's so much that it's hard to know where to begin...but for viewers, that really has to be with "Maude," the '72-'78 CBS sitcom/ "All in the Family" spin-off (she was, as you probably know, Edith's cousin.) I barely remember the show, now thirty-plus years later, but do remember Esther Rolle's Florida Evans, and Bill Macy's Walter Findlay who seemed - again, as I recharge my memory banks - a sad and put upon figure.

"Golden Girls," an NBC stalwart from '85 to '92, was simply remarkable - from out the Brandon Tartikoff kingdom this came, and was a show so durable and so popular for so many years that it now seems hard to believe that some of it's biggest fans...were kids! That always puzzled NBC, too. "Thank You for Being a Friend" remains one of the great TV jingles of all time...

Please go to the jump for my Bea Arthur trip, but I begin with the famous "abortion" moment - or to some, infamous abortion moment - which is part of TV history. (Pix: Sony)
