Alaska TV: 'Terminator: The Sarah Palin Chronicles?'

With Alaska so much in the news these days, we thought we’d take a look at five TV series that have been set in the 49th state. (And we’re not yet counting “Terminator: The Sarah Palin Chronicles,” which undoubtedly will be proposed soon to the networks.)
sarah.jpg

THE ALASKANS (ABC, 1959-60) — A decade and a half before he played James Bond, Roger Moore starred in this drama set in 1890s Skagway as an adventurer/con man looking for action in the Klondike Gold Rush.

KLONDIKE (NBC, 1960-61) — Another Klondike Gold Rush adventure, this one starring James Coburn as a gambler and scoundrel.

NORTHERN EXPOSURE (CBS, 1990-95) — Classic fish-out-of-water story about a transplanted New York doctor (Rob Morrow) living in the fictional town of Cicely, Alaska.

DEADLIEST CATCH (Discovery, 2005--) — Popular reality series that documents events aboard fishing boats in the Bering Sea during the Alaskan king crab and Opilio crab fishing seasons.

MEN IN TREES (ABC, 2006-08) — Another fish-out-of-water tale, this one focusing on about a New York “relationship coach” (Ann Heche) living the fictional Elmo, Alaska.

BONUS: TOUGHER IN ALASKA (History, 2008) — Geo Beach hosted this reality show demonstrating how living in Alaska is just plain harder than it is in the Lower 48.

KODIAK (ABC, 1974) -- One-month series starring Clint Walker as a member of the Alaska State Patrol.

'Camp Rock' Sequel Set

jonas.jpg

Get ready for more "Camp Rock."

Are you surprised? Disney Channel is wasting no time working on a sequel to the Jonas Brothers TV movie, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The trade paper says the channel hopes to go into production on a sequel in late spring or summer 2009, pending a script that's in development as well as the cast members' busy schedules.

All of the principal cast -- including Joe, Kevin and Nick Jonas as well as Demi Lovato -- are expected to return. The Jonases and Lovato, who are touring together this summer, also are working on their respective Disney Channel series, "J.O.N.A.S." and "Welcome to Mollywood."

New "Match Game" Panelists Set

brettsomers.gif

What would Dumb Dora think?

TBS previously announced it will be reviving the great game show "The Match Game" and today they've announced the panelists who will slide into Charles Nelson Reilly and Brett Somers' chairs.

They include Sarah Silverman, Norm MacDonald, Super Dave Osborne (Bob Einstein), Kids in the Hall trouper Scott Thompson, Rashida Jones (“The
Office”) and Niecy Nash (“Reno 911!”).

Andrew Daly (“Semi-Pro”) will be the host. We can only hope he has the sense to bring back Gene Rayburn's iconic stick microphone?.

The original is still run on GSN, so today's viewers can familiarize themselves with panelists Nipsey Russell, Betty White and Richard Dawson to their heart's content.

Oh, Boy: George on 'Today'

Karma Chameleon alert!

'80s icon Boy George will perform on live on "Today" July 7 in his first television concert in ten years, NBC announced today.

BoyGeorge.jpg

The performance marks the unofficial kick-off to the Culture Club frontman's American tour, which begins July 10 in Aspen, Colo. (We're not sure what will constitute the official kickoff.)

And don't say the "Today" crew doesn't have a heart: They'll invite employees of New York City's Department of Sanitation to George's concert.

Remember that George served community service with the department after he pled guilty to falsely reporting a burglary at his New York apartment. George will also perform a special concert for the sanitation employees at the department's Family Day on Aug. 17. You really don't want to hurt them.

And by the way, the comeback tour hits the Capital One Bank Theatre at Westbury on Aug. 5.

And just in case you want to feel like really old: it's been 26 years since we first saw Culture Club prancing on MTV.

CBS Nabs Regis for Summer

CBS announced its summer schedule today, filled with the usual mishmash of reality (more "Big Brother," something called "Greatest American Dog"), game shows as well as a couple of dramas.

244.philbin.regis.101006

The one program we're jazzed about is "Million Dollar Password," an update of the venerable game show. It'll premiere Sunday, June 1, and will be hosted by none other than the ubiquitous Regis Philbin, a 21st century heir to Allen Ludden, if ever there was one.

Like the old show, contestants will team up with big-name stars, including Rosie O'Donnell, Rachael Ray, Neil Patrick Harris, "High School Musical's" Monique Coleman and Betty White (Ludden's widow and a regular on the original show -- ups to you, CBS). The winner can take home $1 million clams.

The dramas include the much-delayed "Swingtown," about swingers in the '70s (we'll take that 1972 "All in the Family" episode with Rue McClanahan and Vincent Gardenia as swingers, thank you) and "Flashpoint," a Canadian-made cop drama.

Kristen: Who Gets the First TV Interview?

244.walters.barbara.101606.jpg

Here's how the world works: You do something really notorious - say, become a prostitute and unwittingly become the instrument by which you unseat the sleazebag governor of New York - and then you look to cash in. In the olden days, you'd first line up the "respectable" interview with Babs Walters. You'd cry a little. Confess a little. Babs would ask you about stains on dresses, and you'd have to deal with that too.

Then...straight to the bank! Absolved by Babs, your agent could then score you a book deal, a magazine deal (one of those pay-for-play profiles in some very thick glossy), and best of all: The TV deal. That might be a full-blown series (reality of course) in an ideal world.

But like I said. Those are the old days. In these days, you head straight to TV, and cash the check fast. So, who's bidding for Kristen/Ashley? NBC News or ABC News? They - of course - couldn't pay outright for the interview, but they could "hire" Kristen/Ashley as a "consultant," who could offer on-air "opinions" about the Luv Guv. (I rule out CBS only because I don't think they'll come up with the necessary change.)

Or...will be it be "Extra" or "Access Hollywood?" My money, ahem, is on "AC" because as part of the NBC Universal empire, NBC can offer "Access," "Nightly News," maybe a cameo on "The Office" and a reality show (it would be offered, but probably never air.)

But I'm getting ahead of myself. I always do. Here's the news. A website - I'm assuming a reputable one because the very reputable TVNewser says it's got creds - claims "Extra" is already offering $100,000 for the interview.

Let the bidding begin!

(Hey, wasn't Babs spotted camping outside Kristen's apartment bldg last night?)

Will Your Faves Be Back?

With an end to the writers' strike possibly -- take a deep breath -- at hand, are you wondering whether your favorite show will be back?

Well, check out this handy-dandy chart compiled by our hard-working fellow corporate drones at the L.A. Times. It'll tell you every thing you need to know about which show will survive or which won't. Hint: "Cavemen" is probably dead.

Craig Ferguson Coming to LI

Craig Ferguson, host of CBS' "Late Late Show," is coming to Long Island.

ferg.jpg

The new American citizen will perform his stand-up act at North Fork Theatre at Westbury on June 27 at 8 p.m., the venue announced today. Tickets, priced at $49.50 and $39.50, go on sale Sunday.

In other Craig news: He revealed Tuesday that he’s been booked as the entertainer at the annual White House correspondents’ dinner in Washington, scheduled for April 26. He described the correspondents’ dinner as “like the Oscars for
politicians.”

News 12 Super Tuesday Plans

So where/what/who/when/why to watch on this Super Tuesday? I'll get a quick network viewers' guide to you shortly, but in the meantime, here's the local TV picture, courtesy News 12. 10.jpg

The bulk of the coverage starts at 5, with live reports from all the campaign headquarters, and there'll be a a 5:30 interview with Nassau County Republican Committee chair Joe Mondello (and McCain supporter.) Then at 7: Lea Tyrrell talks Super Tuesday with political analyst Jerry Kremer - former chair of the state house ways and means. Calls will be taken....3.jpg

Wall-to-wall live coverage starts at 9, with analysis from Scott Feldman and Tyrrell. Analysts: Kremer and Bruce Blakeman (Board of Commissioners, Port Authority). And per News 12, Colleen McVey and Lauren Sivan "will be taking the pulse of the Democratic and Republican focus groups that we've assembled here in 1 Media."

Also, expect live coverage of candidate speeches as they come, of course.

Shepard Smith Ticks off Drew Peterson. What Fun!

Anyone who spends any time watching cable TV news knows that the latest scandal du jour is about this former cop in a Chicago suburb named Drew Peterson whose wife went missing a few months ago. Said cable news has already tried and convicted the guy of murder, but lemme tell ya - he didn't help his case a little while ago.

Peterson was star of a much-hyped exclusive interview with Shepard Smith; interview was going along swimmingly, when Peterson decided he didn't like the drift of the questions, and ripped out his IFB. And that was that. This sort of stuff doesn't happen too often (especially with heavily-plugged interviews) so here it is for your viewing amusement. (A piece of advice: Drag the button up to about 4 minutes to skip all the other stuff, if you're not interested in this over-wrought case).

Heath Ledger's Forgotten TV Show

Heath Ledger may be best known for his movie work, but the late Aussie actor first came to Americans' attention on TV.
roar.jpg

He was the star of the short-lived Fox series "Roar," which aired from July to September 1997 and was produced by former teen idol Shaun Cassidy.

In this action-adventure series set in 400 A.D., Ledger played Conor, a Celtic Prince who, after his family had been massacred by a rival tribe at his brother's wedding, became the reluctant leader of the local tribes in their fight against the Romans.

The series title came from the moment in the first episode in which Conor was told to "remember all we are and all that's come before and hear the roar... the voice that echoes in every living thing, the power that binds us together." (Thanks to Brooks and Marsh's "Complete Directory to PrimeTime TV for the info.)

'Knight Rider' Is Back

"Knight Rider" is firing back to life.

NBC announced today that its long-awaited revival of the 1980s show about a talking car (a high-tech "My Mother, the Car," cynics might say) will air Feb. 17 as a two-hour movie.

The network unveiled the new customized KITT Ford Mustang to be featured in the series in a press event at NBC's Burbank Studios today.

knight.jpg

The movie stars Justin Bruening ("Cold Case," "All My Children"), Deanna Russo ("NCIS," "The Young and the Restless"), Sydney Tamiia Poitier ("Veronica Mars," "Grindhouse") and Bruce Davison ("Breach," "Close to Home").

But the really big news: David Hasselhoff will return as Michael Knight in a special guest-star appearance.

Second piece of really big news: William Daniels won't provide KITT's voice this time around. That honor goes to "Arrested Development's" Will Arnett.

Reality Bites: NBC readies 'Clash of the Choirs'

And you thought the networks were kidding about adding reality shows to the schedule as their scripted dramas wither away because of the writers' strike?

choir.jpg

NBC has just scheduled "Clash of the Choirs," a four-night live “sing off” event (Dec. 17-20).

OK, I know you're probably thinking that it will be awfully cool to see a bunch of folks in white robes bash each other over the heads with chairs.

Alas. that's some other program, no doubt incubating, as I write this, in some mad programmers' mind.

This "Clash of the Choirs" features five top musical acts -- Michael Bolton, Patti LaBelle, Nick Lachey, Kelly Rowland and Blake Shelton -- going back to their hometowns, assembling 20 talented local singers into a kick-butt choir and then throwing the songbirds into live competition. Each night, another choir will be voted off until one remains.

What will they think of next? Don't ask

Stuffing Your Face on Spike TV

Hey sports fans: Bored with watching the NFL on Turkey Day?

We have the sport for you: competitive eating, one of my guilty pleasures (watching it, not participating in it, mind you).

koba.jpg
On Thanksgiving day (Nov. 22), Spike TV will air "MLE Chowdown: The Turkey Bowl" in which the world's top eaters attempt to down an entire 20-pound turkey in 8 minutes. Major League Eating’s top two stars, Joey Chestnut (the current Nathan’s Hot Dog-eating champ) and Kobayashi (the Barry Bonds of the overstuffed set), will battle it out with six top eaters, among them Plainview’s Allen Goldstein. It’ll air at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The record for whole turkey consumption — I thought you’d never ask — is held by Patrick Bertoletti, who ate 4.8 lbs of turkey in 12 minutes last November.

Bees are big this weekend in real-life disaster tales

silence of the bees nature pbs .jpgFirst, “Nature.” Now “60 Minutes” is on the bee-disaster bandwagon, too.

This Sunday, both shows are spotlighting the crisis in which honeybee colonies around the world are suddenly and inexplicably disappearing, threatening the pollination of not only all those pretty flowers but also a huge percentage of the food that feeds us.

Pennsylvania beekeeper Dave Hackenberg sounds the alarm on both programs -- the “Nature” hour “Silence of the Bees” (Sunday at 8 p.m. on PBS) and a Steve Kroft segment on “60 Minutes” (Sunday at 7 p.m. or after football on CBS).

There’s online preview video of “60 Minutes” here and the more comprehensive “Nature” hour here. (“Nature” is also filled with the coolest macro-photography of bees doing their thing.)

The PBS link also leads to lots more info about the Colony Collapse Disorder that’s providing one of the most fascinating real-world mysteries in ages.

And you were worried about global warming . . .

Prison Break Springs the Women

Now, this is a SPINOFF.

Fox is planning "Prison Break: Cherry Hill,” a new series that would be set at a women’s prison and center on Molly, a new regular character that will be introduced on “Prison Break” later this season, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The 411: Molly is an upper-middle-class wife. After suffering a family tragedy at the hands of the Company — the government conspiracy that framed Michael (Wentworth Miller) and Lincoln (Dominic Purcell) and put them behind bars — she seeks them out at the hellish Panamanian prison Sona in her quest to exact vengeance.

womenBars.jpg

By the way, I’m sure no one at Fox remembers that almost 20 years ago the fledgling network premiered a comedy set in a women’s pen. But I do.

The cast of “Women in Prison” included CCH Pounder (“The Shield”) and Peggy Cass (“The Hathaways,” numerous game shows) and was a laff riot.

Suffice to say, it wasn’t renewed for the 1988 season.

We wish Fox good luck in their second try -- but they have a long way to go if they hope to top the greatest women-in-prison TV moment: the "Angels in Chains" episode of "Charlie's Angels."

Deborah Kerr: FMC airs tribute

The Fox Movie Channel (FMC) will also honor the late Deborah Kerr.

The cable channel announced Friday it will air two of the actresses’ best-known movies on Sunday.

At 4 p.m., “The King and I” (1956) in which Kerr played Mrs. Anna, the British schoolteacher brought to Siam to educate the king’s (Yul Brynner) extensive brood, airs at 4 p.m. Kerr doesn’t sing such classics as "Getting to Know You," her voice is dubbed by the ubiquitous Marni Nixon.

039_24792~Deborah-Kerr-Yul-Brynner-in-The-King-and-I-Posters.jpg

That’s followed at 6 by “The Innocents” (1961) in which Kerr plays a governess haunted by spectres that may or may not be real. Truman Capote co-wrote this movie, which was adapted from Henry James’ “Turn of the Screw.”

As previously blogged, Turner Classic Movies will also honor Kerr Sunday by airing “From Here to Eternity” (8 p.m.) and “Separate Tables” (10:15 p.m.).

October 18, 2007

Deborah Kerr Tribute on TCM

Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will pay tribute Sunday to six-time Oscar® nominee Deborah Kerr, who passed away today at the age of 86.

On Sunday, TCM will present a special double feature of two of Kerr’s most memorable nominated roles. At 8 p.m., she stars as a lonely military wife who seeks happiness through an illicit affair in "From Here to Eternity" (1953), co-starring Burt Lancaster, Frank Sinatra and Donna Reed.

At 10:15 p.m., she plays a spinster who is completely dominated by her mother while staying at an English seaside resort in "Separate Tables" (1958), with Lancaster and Oscar winners David Niven and Wendy Hiller.

New ‘60 Minutes’ podcast

Missed “60 Minutes”? That’s easy to do when NFL game overruns skew the start time.

CBS now makes the show’s audio available as a free iTunes podcast download, suitable for portable audio or computer listening, soon after each episode’s premiere. (You can also stream extensive video/audio at CBSnews.com.)

In honor of the show’s 40th season, the CBS site also has a clip from the first broadcast, Sept. 24, 1968, with Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner. But no ticking clock?

"Today' Goes to 4 Hours!

todayto4hrs.jpg
Ready or not, NBC is expanding the “Today” show to four hours.

The network announced the long-rumored move Tuesday, saying Sept. 10 will be the launch day for the fourth hour, 10-11 a.m.

Holding down the desks will be co-anchors Ann Curry, Natalie Morales and Hoda Kotb. Many NBC News correspondents are also expected to be contributing reports. And why do we think Matt, Meredith and Al will manage to show up the first day as well?

NBC launched its third hour (9-10 a.m.) in 2000.

Noth Joins 'Sex' Film

aa_chris_no76226_150.jpg

The rumors are true: Chris Noth will reprise his role of Mr. Big in the upcoming “Sex and the City” film, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Production on the film — written by and to be directed by the series executive producer Michael Patrick King — begin next month in New York.

Noth stars on NBC’s “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” which also shoots in New York, and will continue to work on TV while filming his Big role.

And just in case you forgot: HBO’s “Sex” ended in 2004 with Big flying to Paris to profess his love for Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and bring her back to NYC.

More importantly, we also learned that his first name was... John.

'Dance' Hopefuls to Hit Coliseum

The top ten finalists from Fox’s hit “So You Think You Can Dance” are hitting the road for the show’s second annual live tour.

“Viewing the contestants performing on television does not even come close to experiencing them in person,” show creator Simon Fuller said in a statement.

We'll be the judge of that, sir, but the 49-city tour begins Sept. 21 in Albany with an Oct. 9 date set for Nassau Coliseum. Tickets go on sale Saturday.

This season’s champ will be crowned on the Aug. 16 show.

Ellen vs. Ellen

WLNY/55 (Ch. 10 on Cablevision) will be airing same-day editions of “Ellen” every weekday starting Sept. 3, the LI-based channel announced Wednesday.

Ch. 55 has been airing at 10 a.m. weekdays the same episode of “Ellen” that ran the previous day on WNBC/4 at 4 p.m. That might account for the strange sense of deja vu you may have experienced once in awhile.

ellen_27.jpg
But as of Sept. 3, the same day’s “Ellen” will air at 4 p.m. on Ch. 55. For the first week, that means “Ellen” on 55 will be airing against “Ellen” on 4.

Ch. 4 is expected to move “Ellen” to a new time slot starting the following week.

CHRIS ISHAM TO CBS NEWS

Amidst these dark days at CBS News [see: NY Mag] there finally comes a particularly bright ray of light this morning: The network has grabbed Christopher Isham to become its Washington bureau chief, replacing the well-regarded veteran Janet Leisner, who is retiring. To most viewers this may be no big deal, but Isham was a behind-the-scenes investigative star at ABC News, from whence he comes, and probably network TV's best-known gumshoe after Brian Ross - who is well known to viewers, of course.

Isham and his I-team at ABC News have broken countless stories over the years but the one that comes immediately to mind - pointed out by the CBS press release - was the John Miller interview with Osama Bin Laden in '98. Isham started at ABC in '78, after a spell at NBC News. The appointment is effective early September.

HOT TO WATCH: “Battlefield Breakdown” back on

CNN investigates the costs of America’s military actions in Iraq this weekend in its report “Battlefield Breakdown” (Saturday and Sunday at 8 and 11 p.m.). The much-hyped documentary was pushed back from its scheduled prime-time debut last week by a new “War Within” report after the attempted U.K. terror attacks.

Correspondent John King tallies costs of $500 billion, more than 3,500 Americans killed (and 25,000 wounded), and “a devastating impact on the readiness of the U.S. Army and the National Guard.” King also examines inadequate planning, rushed training and scarce resources.

ANDY EDELSTEIN: B-I-N-G-O ON ABC

Now that poker and blackjack have become TV staples, are you ready for bingo on TV?

Well, get ready. ABC announced Wednesday that on May 18 it will be airing “National Bingo Night,” which the network breathlessly describes as a “high-energy, truly interactive game of luck based on the popular American pastime.”

And you thought watching Yolanda Vega pick the Lottery numbers was exciting?

In each of three games, viewers can play along with the studio audience by printing their own Bingo cards from ABC.com. Those who get Bingo can log on to win.

And because this is television and not a bingo game at your grandpa’s Elks Lodge, ABC’s game will be set in a high-tech “Bingo Plex” arena and the numbered balls will be drawn from a giant, two-and-a-half story sphere.

If this is successful, can "Celebrity Bingo" be far behind?
